Prostate Cancer Drugs That May Cause Sudden Death Now Require Warning Labels

November 8th, 2010

shutterstock_2780596This year an estimated 32,050 men will die from prostate cancer and more than 200,000 men will be diagnosed with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in the U.S. after skin cancer.

Prostate cancer drugs that can cause heart attack, stroke, diabetes and even sudden death must now carry labels to warn patients of their potential risks, according to a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration rule.

In May, the FDA first announced the drugs’ links to the health problems, saying patients taking gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists were at a small increased risk for the health complications.

“I think this was long due,” said Dr. David Samadi, vice chair of Urology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. “A lot of times the risks [of taking the medication] outweigh the benefit; as more and more patients read about side effects, they will choose surgery over radiation.”

Not only are the drugs bad especially for men with heart problems, but they induce symptoms of “male menopause,” he said, causing depression, fatigue and weight gain. These changes occur naturally as men age and their testosterone drops, but the drugs bring them on sooner, he said.

However, in very serious prostate cancer, the drugs still work wonders, said Dr. Ana Aparicio, an assistant medical oncology professor at the University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

“These drugs are extremely effective for treating this disease, and in all do make people feel better,” Aparicio said.

Fatal Car Crashes Involving Teens Decrease by a Third

October 25th, 2010

shutterstock_2657203According to a new federal report, fatal car accidents involving teen drivers dropped by about a third over the span of five years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of teen deaths fell dramatically from approximately 2,200 in 2004 to 1,400 in 2008. The report partly credits the drop to tougher driving restrictions placed on younger drivers.

The CDC looked at fatal accidents involving drivers who were 16 or 17 years of age. There were more than 9,600 such incidents during the five-year span and more than 11,000 people died in the crashes. The rate of these fatal crashes has been declining since 1996. Experts believe that stricter laws and restrictions on teens (including curbing when teens can drive and when they can carry passengers) is the chief reason for the decline.

According to Russ Rader, a spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an Arlington, Va.-based research group funded by auto insurance companies, “It’s not that teens are becoming safer, it’s that state laws enacted in the last 15 years are taking teens out of the most hazardous driving situations.”

September 16th, 2010

Recent testing revealed that there is a potential problem with the airbag modules not meeting the requirements for the protection of an unbelted, child test dummy in the front seats. Honda says that no incidents have been reported.

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller Sign Divorce Agreement

July 27th, 2010

shutterstock_2168977Actor Charlie Sheen and wife Brooke Mueller signed divorce papers late last month. Speculation of an impending divorce surfaced last December when Sheen was arrested for alleged domestic abuse.

Per the 41-page agreement, Sheen and Mueller will share joint custody of their two children. The couple signed a 60-page prenuptial agreement that provided Brooke with an annual allowance ($300,000) in the event of divorce. Mueller waived spousal support but she will receive $55,000 a month in child support.

The divorce agreement papers were signed just hours after the actor’s luxury vehicle was found lying about 100 feet over the side of Mulholland Drive. The car was abandoned when police arrived. FDA Committee Delivers Split Verdict on the Diabetes Drug Avandia

July 20th, 2010

iStock_000002232117XSmallAvandia, which was put on the market in 1999, is also known as rosiglitazone. Avandia is a drug taken once or twice daily to manage type 2 diabetes. It is prescribed to those who need more than one medicine to help treat their diabetes in different ways.

Most of the committee members voted to leave Avandia on the market but recommended that changes be made in how it is prescribed. Additionally, 12 out of the committee’s 33 members voted to pull Avandia off the market altogether, while only three supported leaving it on the market with its current labeling. Seven voted to add stiffer warnings to the current label, and 10 wanted both stiffer language and restrictions on its use.

A 2007 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, linked the drug to a 43 percent higher chance of heart attack as well as in increased risk of stroke and, in some cases, death. After that, federal regulators mandated that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) add more warnings to the drug’s labeling.

GSK is facing more than 13,000 legal challenges, and has already awarded $60 million to settle some of them. A Philadelphia court will hear the first American cases in October.

Danger Asbestos Warning Sign

Early this spring, Malcolm McLaren, fashion designer and former manager of the Sex Pistols, passed away from mesothelioma. At the time of his death, his doctors were unable to explain the source of his toxic exposure to asbestos, which in almost all cases is the explanation behind a diagnosis of this rare cancer. Friends and loved ones have now concluded that McLaren was exposed in his fashion boutique SEX on Kings Road in London; the store is believed to have contained asbestos materials in its construction and layout.

McLaren owned and operated the boutique from 1971 to 1980.

Mesothelioma can affect several different organs in the body, not just the lungs. When mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lungs, it is called pleural mesothelioma.

Young Kim, McLaren’s longtime girlfriend, is currently in the process of bringing a lawsuit against the hospital where McLaren was treated. The complaint claims the hospital misdiagnosed his condition early on. Kim blames the doctors for his misdiagnosis and for the lack of treatment for his mesothelioma. She plans to take her legal battle to court.
